I know the poem (i think from school) but had no idea about the Medici connection. So thank you for this.

I too have sketchy knowledge of this amazing dynasty. Partly because there were so many of them and partly because they kept using the same names but i think mostly because they seem to have a lot of notoriety (and bad Netflix films). I saw that portrait of Eleanor of Toledo when I went to Florence last year. I didn’t get to the Pitti Palace so could not have elated to the childhood you describe. But a fascinating story. Thankyou.

I remember standing in front of the extraordinary Eleanor of Toledo portrait. The book sounds interesting.

I’ve been on a couple of adventures sparked by reading novels. Snow Falling on Cedars inspired a holiday to Seattle and around Puget Sound. And a childhood favourite book by Henry Treece, Vinland the Good, inspired me to insist we drive all the way up to the northernmost tip of Newfoundland to see the Viking settlement at l’Anse aux Meadows.
