We used to live close enough to Bath to visit every couple of weeks, it's a lovely city - architecturally of course, and it used to be full of bookshops!
I did my teaching year at Bristol University so wasn’t very far away then (a long time ago) but only ever visited once. We were very lucky with the weather last weekend so it was perfect for wandering and sightseeing. Didn’t venture into a single shop though for books or anything else. I did gaze into the window of Persephone Books but I could see the men glazing over so I didn’t linger… especially as I had declined my stepson’s suggestion to watch the rugby. I didn’t want to push my luck 😉
Bath is such a beautiful city. I grew up just a few miles away and lived there until I moved to the Fens in my early twenties. I haven’t been back for a long while since mum died. Really must visit again soon 😊
do you live in Cambridge? I went to Cambridge in 1956 to study nursing at the Old Addenbrooke’s hospital. Also was a student nurse at the old Papworth Hospital where I assisted at operations on dogs when they were perfecting the heart lung machine. I also remember as a young nurse mentally making a connection between lung cancer and smoking. I noted that without exception that every single patient with lung cancer were heavy smokers, even smoking just before being wheeled into surgery for removal of lungs or part lungs. Small world. By the was do you not quilt /textile art anymore?
We’re in a village just south of Cambridge so not far from the centre. You wouldn’t recognise it now Marilyn. Addenbrookes is on a huge campus to the south of the city and the new Papworth hospital is also on the same site.
And on the other note, not much textile art these days as I prefer to paint. I still sew though and have some hand embroidery on my lap right now!
oh my goodness, can’t believe so much has changed in Cambridge, especially with Addenbrookes and Papworth, unbelievable! My husband is from the Lake District and my daughter lived in London with her family so over the years I have spent a lot of time in England but strangely never ever returned to visit Cambridge, thanks so much for the info, it has certainly triggered trips down memory lane

It’s years since I was last there and I had forgotten how beautiful it is. Looking forward to a return visit before too long
