I really loved your newsletter today. It really resounded with me. Up until now I have never been brave enough to take my sketch book on my hols, even after doing your drawing course. But in a couple of weeks Mr. W and myself are off to Valencia for a week and Iām determined to do some sketching. And be proud of my sketches however wonky they are. š. Wish me luck šš
So pleased you enjoyed it Janine and do take a sketchbook with you. I usually pack a small box with just a few pens and pencils, coloured crayons and a glue stick and scissors. Sticking tickets etc down on the pages can also be a great way to starting filling up the book. Good luck and enjoy Valencia
My pleasure Lisa, I love your writing and look forward to the next instalment. I would love to do what youāre doing, it sounds like such an adventure. We drove through France to Italy a few years ago without any plan of our route or where we would stay, just using an old fashioned map and stopping wherever we were tired, hoping weād find a vacancy for a room. It was great fun.
Iām so with you on this - big cruise ship? Even thinking about being contained, only able to walk laps around the decks. No "entertainment" or diversion offered could mask my total and utter boredom, but the sort of boredom that makes your skin itch. Iād be climbing the walls (or overboard!). Your cruise, however, sounds delightful - apart from the crowded destinations. And yep, how dare other people think of being on holiday at the same time?! This is why we go to NW FinistĆØre and get blown inside out, never the south and the resorts. Shudder! Looking forward to seeing the quirky things that caught your eye next time. Swap you for my photos of seaweed and sketches of barnacles or marram grass! I never draw 'scenes' eitherā¦
Canāt think of anything worse than a big cruise, although many years ago I did accompany a school trip on a cruise around the Mediterraneanā¦ three teachers and thirty fifteen years olds. It was interesting! š¤Ø
I loved this piece, Gina. Having a sketchbook certainly does help pause and take notice in the way a camera never does. One of my greatest gripes of modern life is the now constant walking around with a phone, but not actually looking, especially in galleries, and like you, I want to scream at them! The Rhine does look very beautiful and I am so glad you had a lovely holiday.
Thank you Deborah. We obviously think alike. Iām now reading my copy of āDear Readerā and you were right I love it. I canāt put it down and there are so many books she recommends that I now want to readā¦ or in some cases reread. Thank you for recommending it!
Hello, I thoroughly enjoyed this last newsletter of yours. Iāve been wanting to go on one of these boat rides, but like you canāt stand the idea of a mob aboard a gigantic cruiser. I also have a newsletter which Iāve wanted to share with you, but, it is best that you look at my Facebook page Emily Eve Weinstein and see if you like what I write. I actually took a class to figure out how to carry-on with a newsletter. Yours I feel are a bit less censored and that, I happen to really like. You break many of the rules of the class I took. Thank you for sharing all you do, Em
P.S. Please let me know if you would like to receive my newsletter. The last one is about the cicadas that have descended by the trillions in this area and landed in my work. Unsubscribe at anytime.
Thank you Emily, Iām so pleased you are enjoying my writing. Iād love to know what rules Iām breaking but maybe itās for the best I donāt š
At least this way you are getting āmy voiceā rather than something I think I ought to be doing! Iāll have a look at what you are writing too!

Thank you for the kind mention, Gina--and for the very enjoyable read! You've made me think I might need to learn to draw.

Hello here is my last newsletter, I hope. Sending a link? The substack only allows. Normally they get sent to regular emails. Best, Em
I love the painting Em! We donāt have cicadas here but the sound of them on holiday is very evocative of being somewhere away from home x
