Saffron Walden is a market town in Essex with a rich history, once famous for the crocus fields producing saffron in the 16th and 17th centuries, which was used in medicine, perfumery, as an expensive dye, even an aphrodisiac as well as the more familiar culinary uses.
What an interesting post Gina - I didn't know anything about this museum or Sheila Robinson - that parrot! Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful gem. x
It’s well worth a visit Lindsey. I confess both were unknown to me too before last week. I’m now very excited as I have booked a day printing with Chloe Cheese. I hope your ankle heals quickly x
I would have come with you Gina - if it's the one on 8th June unfortunately I won't be here. I'm sure it will be a fabulous day. I will DM you about meeting up, that would be lovely. x
Yes, it’s on 8th June. A whole day making art seemed too good to miss. I am away from tomorrow until the following Tuesday just in case I don’t reply , but meeting up will be lovely x
Thank you Gina for taking the time to write about your visit. We are very lucky in Bedford to have the work of Edward Bawden on permanent display at the Higgins Gallery.
My pleasure Catherine and thank you for your kind comment. The Higgins is another gallery I have enjoyed visiting in the past and it was an exhibition there last year that sent me off to find out more about Stanley Spencer. It always feels like a mini adventure to discover new art work.
Gina, I do love how you bring to my attention so many unknown artists. The works shown here are delightful, and I too would be happy to hang any of them on my walls.
Thank you Kim. The work was beautiful and very 'accessible'. I'm not a great fan of art I have to work hard to understand. Ultimately it's about what we like.
So interesting Gina - my aunt used to live in Saffron Walden but I’ve never visited the Fry Gallery even though it’s on my to do list! I must make an effort to go there - the cafe might entice my Mick there too - he loves a good cake!
It's a little bit tucked away so not a place you would automatically find on a visit to the town, but it's definitely worth going. And plenty of places selling cake to keep MIck happy!
Many thanks for the recommendations Gina. I enjoy visiting Saffron Walden twice a year with a friend so we will definitely seek out that cafe and the exhibition on our next visit.

I love the Fry Gallery and this is an exhibition I am looking forward to visiting!
I think you will love it Deborah!

I don't think you will be disappointed Yvonne.
